Start Your Solo Practice
You know how to be a therapist. Starting a business brings a whole new set of questions.
Do you need an LLC? Should you take insurance? How much should you charge—and how many clients do you actually need to see?
This live online course walks you through the foundations of opening your first solo practice. Together, we’ll work through the decisions, numbers, and everyday systems that go into building a practice that works for you.
Five live sessions • 90 minutes each • $400 total
Workbook included
Thursdays, 5–6:30 p.m. Eastern
November 5, 12 & 19 and December 10 & 17, 2026
For Therapists Who Are New to Practice Ownership
This course is designed for therapists considering or preparing to open their first solo practice. You don’t need a business name, an EHR, or a detailed plan before joining.
It may be a good fit if you:
Want to go solo but aren’t sure where to begin.
Have started getting things together and want to understand what you might be missing.
Feel comfortable with the clinical work but less confident about the business side.
Want to compare cash pay, insurance, and a combination of both.
Would appreciate a structured place to ask questions and plan your next steps.
We’ll start with the foundations. If you already run an established practice and need help with a specific challenge, individual practice coaching may be a better fit.
What We’ll Cover
Session 1: Building the Foundation
What actually needs to be in place before you see your first client? We’ll sort through the initial setup decisions and help you identify where to start.
Business names, DBAs, and business structure considerations.
EINs, business banking, and Type 1 versus Type 2 NPIs.
Choosing an EHR and basic practice systems.
Virtual versus in-person practice.
Business protections and preparing to see your first client.
Session 2: Cash Pay, Insurance & Your Business Model
Your payment model shapes your practice. We’ll explore the options and how they connect to your fees, caseload, and income goals.
Cash pay, insurance, and hybrid practices.
Setting private-pay fees and understanding insurance reimbursement.
Direct credentialing versus third-party platforms.
Payer mix and the financial impact of cancellations.
Calculating how many sessions you need—and what a “full caseload” means for you.
Session 3: Money, Taxes & Profitability
Money coming into your practice isn’t the same as money you can take home. We’ll make the basic numbers easier to understand and use.
Revenue, practice expenses, owner pay, and profit.
Planning for taxes.
Basic bookkeeping and accounting systems.
When to involve a bookkeeper or CPA.
S-Corp basics and questions to discuss with your CPA.
Assessing whether your practice is financially sustainable.
Session 4: Marketing Without Throwing Money at It
We’ll explore how to help potential clients and referral partners find you—and how to make thoughtful decisions about where to spend your time and money.
Identifying who you want to work with.
Developing a niche without boxing yourself in.
Websites, therapist directories, and Google/SEO basics.
Referral relationships and networking.
Social media and Facebook groups.
Tracking referral sources and recognizing spending that isn’t helping.
Session 5: Running the Practice
Once the practice is open, the work shifts to keeping it running. We’ll connect the everyday tasks to routines you can realistically maintain.
Intake and scheduling workflows.
Policies and boundaries.
Billing systems and tracking revenue.
Administrative routines and when to outsource.
Staying solo versus eventually hiring.
Creating a 30/60/90-day action plan.
We’ll also leave time for questions as you pull the pieces together.
A Place to Learn, Ask Questions, and Make a Plan
We’ll meet live online for five 90-minute sessions. You’ll have opportunities to ask questions, think through your options, and connect what we cover to the practice you want to build.
Your workbook is included to help you follow along, organize your thinking, and identify next steps. Between sessions, you can revisit the material and bring back questions that arise as you work through your plans.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before joining. That’s what we’re here to work on.
Want Support Putting Your Plan Into Practice?
